1992
FutureCorp Cowichan, then Community Futures, spearheaded a broad-based partnership between local government and community organizations to develop a vision for the Cowichan Region. More than 1000 people took part in the process through surveys, interviews and a two-day conference. Not only did the regional community develop and endorse vision statements for the overall region and six key sectors that affect the quality of life in the Cowichan Region, but one of the most significant outcomes was the sense of community that grew as a result of the process.

2003
Visions 2020 was created under FutureCorp Cowichan and a steering committee was formed to revisit and update the vision statements. The objective was to involve residents of the Region in creating a vision for their community - the community they would like to be living in by the year 2020.
The process was specifically designed to be non-partisan and community-driven. It was an opportunity created by the community, for the community. While there was sincere hope that municipal, provincial and federal government agencies would support and adopt the community vision resulting from the process, the overriding aim of the initiative was that community members would take part in implementing their vision.

2004
Input was gathered through community consultation to update the 1992 vision statements.

2005
Public Forum
People who attended the meeting came up with priority actions to achieve the vision statements. They asked that another meeting be held in the near future to report back on some of these actions. The revised vision statements were then ratified.

Roundtables
Ten months later eight Roundtables were held in various parts of the Cowichan Region. Participants represented a broad section of the community. The information they provided led to more research about regional activities and initiatives.
From the roundtables we now have a better understanding of where we would like the region to be in the year 2020. This community initiative has lead to partnerships and information sharing. As a result, we have started an on-line Resource Information Bank so services, organizations, and projects - even ideas, can be shared throughout the Cowichan Region.

2006
Another public forum was held on March 16 to talk about:
  • Things that are currently happening in the Cowichan Region that reflect the Visions Statements;
  • A Resource Information Bank of projects and services in the Cowichan Region;
  • Ways we can keep the vision front and center in everyone's minds; and
  • To celebrate our work to date.
